Highlight a passage on your phone, and find it in your notes on every device.

Most reading apps keep your highlights to themselves. The Jotura reader on Android saves each highlight, and your comment on it, to a plain Markdown note for that book. The note syncs to your computer like any other, where you can link a quote into lecture notes, an essay outline or the notes on your next book.

How it goes in practice.

  1. Add the books

Put EPUBs, PDFs and CBZ comics in your vault. Books up to 95 MB sync to the phone and wait for Wi-Fi unless you allow mobile data.

  2. Read and highlight

Press and hold on a passage to highlight it in one of four colours and add a comment if you have one. Highlights work in EPUBs and in PDFs that contain text.

  3. Open the note

Each book gets a Markdown note in your highlights folder, holding every quote and comment. Edit it on any device.

  4. Connect it

Link quotes into lecture notes or an essay outline, and tag them by course or theme, like #history/victorian.

What helps along the way.

  • Continue reading on the phone lists the books you have started, and your place syncs privately between devices.
  • Delete a quote from the highlights note and the highlight leaves the book.
  • The phone searches by title and text. The desktop adds search by meaning.
  • The reader is on Android, and iOS is planned. The highlights notes open on every device.
