Changelog.

v0.13.2

Improvements to existing features

  • Canvases match your theme. With Canvas (preview) on, a canvas uses your theme's background, panel, hover and accent colours in light and dark mode, for every built-in theme and your own Jotura/theme.json. The canvas file keeps its own background, so it looks the same in Obsidian. Drawings switch to light or dark from how light your background is, so a custom theme with a light background in dark mode keeps strokes readable.

v0.13.1

New features

  • Canvas (preview). Turn on Settings > Editor > Canvas (preview) to open Excalidraw files as canvases you can draw on, paste images into and edit in place. With it on, the sidebar's new-file menu, the dashboard and the command palette offer New canvas, and canvases your agent made with jotura canvas open as drawings. Turning it off saves any open canvas first and shows the file as Markdown source again. Canvases are still in preview, so keep a backup of the ones you care about, and avoid editing the same canvas on a device running Jotura 0.12 or older at the same time.

Improvements to existing features

  • One name for drawings. The CLI, its help and the docs now call Excalidraw files canvases throughout.

v0.13.0

New features

  • Agents draw diagrams. jotura canvas create Plan --spec spec.json turns a short list of boxes and arrows into an Excalidraw canvas. Trees come out tidy, a simple cycle becomes a ring, boxes can sit in named frames, and arrows route around boxes and keep their labels apart. canvas add, update, remove and layout change a canvas later, and canvas render Plan --out plan.png draws it so the agent can check its work. Canvases use the Obsidian Excalidraw format, so they open in Obsidian's Excalidraw plugin. Update the Jotura skills from the marketplace so your agent knows the commands.

Improvements to existing features

  • Notes open and save faster. Notes, plain text files and previews open without the short waits they had before, source mode finishes setting up after the note is already on screen, and large notes save faster.

Fixes

  • Typing in source mode while an earlier save is still finishing keeps your newest text marked unsaved, so it is saved too.
  • A note with a long, deeply nested list opens in the rich editor in short steps again, so the window keeps responding.

v0.12.0

Improvements to existing features

  • Exact names come first in search. Type a note's full name in quick open, the link picker, the search pane or the phone's search and that note leads the list. Notes whose names start with what you typed follow, with recently opened notes nearer the top. Loose fuzzy matches now sit below matches inside your notes. jotura search and jotura quick-open use the same order.
  • Large notes open faster. A note opens in one pass when that is quick, and long tables and deeply nested lists build in short steps so the window keeps responding. Switching a large note between rich and source mode keeps the rich view in place, so switching back is instant.
  • Large vaults stay quick. The Tasks pane and the phone's Notes and Files lists draw only the rows on screen. Creating, moving or deleting a file refreshes only the folders it touched, and notes from a large import become searchable as they land. Opening a vault skips documents whose converted copy is already current.
  • Phone search. Matching note names appear first, then matches inside notes, and a new search stops the one before it.
  • Agent skills are yours to manage. Jotura no longer installs, syncs or edits your AI agents' skills, instruction files or hooks, so Settings > Agents and the jotura skill, jotura hook and jotura agents commands are gone, and Agents/ is an ordinary folder. You can set up your agent files however you like, and we can put our time into making Jotura the best notes app with the best AI access, which comes through the CLI. Install the Jotura skills the way you install any other skill, for example /plugin marketplace add adamrichardson14/jotura-agents in Claude Code. Skills an earlier version installed stay where they are and still mention the removed commands, so update them from the marketplace or delete them.

Fixes

  • What you type in the second before you switch tabs from the keyboard, or follow a link inside the note, is saved to the note you left.
  • A new note opens with the caret in the editor, ready to type, in rich and source mode.
  • The name box for a new note or folder lines up with the other items in that folder.
  • jotura frontmatter set and delete, and jotura tag add and remove, replace a key's whole value, so a list or multi-line value under the key no longer breaks the frontmatter.
  • A jotura edit --if-hash conflict includes the diff between the current note and the edit you intended.

v0.11.1

Fixes

  • Ticking tasks on Android. A tap just beside a checkbox ticks the task and leaves the keyboard and your scroll position where they were.
  • Books in the Android Files list. Each book shows once. The text copy the desktop makes of a book stays hidden, so a tap always opens the reader.
  • Desktop updates. Installing an update saves the note you have open first, and the next launch no longer reports that Jotura closed unexpectedly.
  • Search. Note history snapshots stay out of search results.

v0.11.0

New features

  • Book reader on Android. Open an EPUB, PDF or CBZ from the Files tab. Tap or swipe to turn pages, pinch to zoom, and open the reader menu for the table of contents and reader themes. Comics can read right to left for manga.
  • Continue reading. The Recent tab opens with covers of the books you are partway through, and a tap picks up on your page. Books without a cover get a generated one. Your place syncs through your own vault, so it stays private even for a book in a shared folder.
  • Book highlights. Hold on a passage in an EPUB or a text PDF, pick one of four colours and add a comment if you like. Each book gets a Markdown note such as Highlights/Pride and Prejudice - Highlights.md that you can read and edit on any device. Delete a quote from that note and the highlight goes with it. In the reader, the Highlights list shows them all, and Open in book jumps from a quote to its page.
  • Media tab. Click an image or a video in the desktop sidebar to preview it or play it inside Jotura.
  • Sign out other devices. Settings > Account & sync ends every session on your account except the one you are using.
  • Sharing key codes. The share dialog shows a key code for each person. When someone's key changes, Jotura pauses sharing with them until you compare codes and confirm. A folder someone shares with you joins your vault only after you review it and press Add.

Improvements to existing features

  • Books sync up to 95 MB. On the phone they wait for Wi-Fi unless you turn on Download books over mobile data in Settings. Desktops on 0.10.0 or older pause sync at the first book over 17 MB, so update every desktop.
  • Search by meaning with OpenAI. Indexing sends requests in parallel and paces itself to your account's limits. Large documents become searchable in stages, a new book reaches your other devices within about a minute, and search shows keyword results while search by meaning is busy.
  • Document conversion. RTF and OpenDocument files convert. Old .doc and .ppt files are stored without a converted copy, and moving a document moves its converted note with it.
  • Safer sync. Sync refuses hidden folders, unsupported file types and files over their size limit. Resetting your sharing key asks for a code from your email.
  • Stored secrets. On Windows, the keys and sign-in tokens on your computer are encrypted with your Windows account. The Android app keeps your vault out of Android backups.

Fixes

  • A custom theme loads as soon as the vault opens.
  • On Windows, a note an agent edits from the command line reloads in its open tab.
  • The phone editor keeps what you typed when you leave it during a save.
  • The Windows document converter works with a per-user install.
  • Opening the same database from two places at once works, with no 'database is locked' error.

v0.10.0

New features

  • Low-resource mode. Machines with 8 GB of memory or less, fewer than four cores or a spinning disk switch it on by themselves, and background work runs at a gentler pace. Turn it on or off in Settings.
  • Safe graphics mode. If the Jotura window goes blank, turn on Safe graphics mode in Settings to stop GPU drawing.
  • Crash reports. After an unexpected close, the next launch offers to send a report, and every error screen has a Report this button. Reports leave out note names, vault paths and email addresses. On Android, use Report an issue in the account sheet.
  • Sidebar drag and drop. Hold Ctrl or Cmd to select several items, then drag them into a folder or cut and paste them. Undo puts them back.
  • Reset sync state. A damaged sync database shows as a sync error with a Reset sync state button, which rebuilds it and leaves your notes alone.

Improvements to existing features

  • Search by meaning runs on the processor by default. Turn on the graphics card for it in Settings. A slower machine asks before downloading the model when another device turns the feature on.
  • Large files. Files over 25 MB open as a notice with a button to open them in another app, pasted files over 100 MB are declined, and dropped documents convert one at a time.
  • Sync pacing. Sync checks every five seconds while Jotura is in front, and less often in the background or on battery.
  • Search index location. The index lives in your system cache folder, so a vault kept in OneDrive or iCloud cannot damage it.
  • Tables keep every inline format when you resize a column.

Fixes

  • Selecting table cells no longer stops the editor with 'Cannot read properties of undefined'.
  • Each note keeps its own undo history, so undo after switching notes stays in the note you are in.

v0.9.12

Fixes

  • Shares stay in their own vault. With more than one vault on the same account, opening a second vault could pull in the folders you had shared from your main one. After updating, open the vault that holds your shares first so it claims them. Until it does, those shares stay hidden on a newly set up device.

v0.9.11

Improvements to existing features

  • Phone search results. Keyword results list title matches first, then folder matches, then matches inside note text, with shared notes grouped under Shared with me.
  • Search by meaning on the phone is switched off for now, since filling the phone's index took many minutes in the foreground. The phone keeps keyword search, and the desktop and the command line keep search by meaning.

Fixes

  • Sharing embeddings between devices works again for notes with many sections, and the phone reports a failed refresh with a message.

v0.9.10

New features

  • Two agent switches. Settings > Agents has Sync agent files between devices and Install the Jotura skills as separate switches. The skills are written once when you turn them on and left alone after that, so your edits stay. Press Reinstall when you want the latest version. The install scripts leave agent files alone.

Improvements to existing features

  • Large notes. Typing in source mode stops rebuilding the rich editor on every keystroke. Notes over half a megabyte or four thousand blocks open in source mode, with a button to switch to rich editing.
  • Large vaults. The sidebar draws only the rows you can see, so selecting, scrolling and arrowing through tens of thousands of notes takes milliseconds. Link resolution and quick open read an in-memory catalog.
  • Opening a vault returns at once. Indexing, reconciliation and embedding run in the background and never hold up saving, searching or switching vaults.
  • Sync downloads several changes at once, so restoring many small notes takes a quarter of the time, and it keeps memory in check on large text files.
  • Android lists, opens and searches notes without freezing the screen. Signing out keeps your vault on the phone, so signing back in resumes where you were.
  • Search by meaning answers the last query you typed, reuses embeddings for repeated wording, and keeps its phone index warm between searches.
  • CLI search. jotura search keeps a cache in vaults Jotura already manages, so repeated searches over a large vault return in tens of milliseconds.

Fixes

  • A restore finishes when the server has already retired an old version of a file.
  • A wrong sync password on Android shows its error with the keyboard still up.

v0.9.9

New features

  • Vault settings travel with the vault. The daily notes folder, attachments folder, default folder for new notes, task window, theme and other vault settings apply on every device that opens the vault. Fonts, keys and machine preferences stay on each computer. An Obsidian vault is left untouched until you change one of these settings.
  • Renames update links. Rename a note or folder and every wiki and Markdown link to it updates. Links inside code stay as written.
  • Notifications pane. Sign-in, sync unlock, document conversion and app updates gather in the Notifications pane in the right sidebar, and one bar above your notes appears when something needs you.
  • Share key rotation. Removing someone from a share gives it a fresh key, so they keep what they saw and cannot read anything new. If you lose every device holding your identity key, make a new one and your shares are sealed to it again. Anyone still on 0.9.8 sees a sync error on a rotated share until they update.
  • Search by meaning on Android. The phone uses the embeddings your computers already made, so it never pays to embed your notes.

Improvements to existing features

  • Editing keeps your formatting. Callouts, bold text around inline code, hard-wrapped paragraphs, list markers and underlined headings keep their original form when you edit.
  • Home tab shows recently modified notes straight away in a large vault and keeps the list current as you edit.
  • OpenAI key reaches your other devices without saving it again.
  • The app starts a little faster.

Fixes

  • Documents convert on Windows again. Installers from 0.9.3 onward had shipped without the converter, and every release now checks it is inside each installer.
  • A rename never overwrites an edit that lands at the same moment.
  • On Android, returning to the app shows no network error, the keyboard comes back if you were typing, and ticking a task in a long note keeps your scroll position.
  • Dragging a table column narrower moves on the first drag.
  • A note that opened blank while another program was still writing it fills in on its own.

v0.9.8

New features

  • Shared embeddings. Whichever device makes an edit embeds it, and your other devices fetch the result through end-to-end encrypted sync. A second computer reaches a full index in minutes with no API calls, and the server stores only ciphertext.
  • AI agent integration switch. Settings has an AI agent integration switch, off by default. It lists the files it will write, then installs the Jotura skill for the agents on your machine and brings their configuration into the vault to sync. The installer touches agent files only when you turn on Set up AI agents too on the download page or pass --with-ai.

Improvements to existing features

  • Search by meaning is a vault setting. Turning it on, switching models or re-indexing on one computer does the same on all of them.
  • OpenAI key syncs encrypted under your sync key. Save it again in Settings on one device after upgrading and the others pick it up.
  • Editing rewrites only the block you change, and HTML comments stay exactly as written.

Fixes

  • Typing in a note that ended in a list, table or code block rewrote the whole note, joining wrapped lines and breaking agent instruction files so they refused to sync. Only the edited block changes now.
  • Dragging a note or folder in the Windows sidebar works again.
Older releases

v0.9.7

New features

  • Home tab. Click the logo or run Open Home from the command palette to see your recently modified and recently closed notes without closing your tabs.
  • Saved column widths. Drag a table column to resize it. The width is saved in the note's frontmatter under a jotura key, so it follows the note to your other devices and to anyone you share it with. A table you never resize writes nothing.

Improvements to existing features

  • Sidebar search. The search icon always puts the cursor in the box, Tab cycles Keyword, Semantic and Smart, and both search boxes have a clear button.
  • Sidebar keyboard. The highlight follows the open note, the right arrow expands a folder, and the arrow keys work while you rename.
  • Sync setup. Tab moves between the password fields and between the words when you confirm your recovery phrase.
  • Agents. jotura read on an image reports where it is and what it is, jotura links shows where each embedded file lives, and the skill explains how to look at images.

Fixes

  • Sync comes back after your laptop sleeps. It retries every so often, up to once a minute, and tries again when the window regains focus.
  • A refused rename or move explains why.
  • Renaming onto a shared note or folder is refused, and a device holding an old copy can no longer move a shared note.
  • On Android, the cursor stays on the word you were typing when you return to the app, even after changes from another device.

v0.9.6

Fixes

  • Turning a folder into a share could delete the copies on your other computers if they heard about the move before the share. The instruction now carries its reason, and devices notice new or removed shares within seconds.
  • Unsharing a folder returns it to normal sync on every device. Other devices used to stop syncing it silently.
  • A share whose details cannot be read waits and asks again, so a note is never mistaken for a folder.

v0.9.5

Improvements to existing features

  • Invitation bar. Invitations you can act on appear as a slim bar above your notes with Accept and Dismiss, whether or not a vault is open. The Notifications pane keeps everything, dismissed invitations included.
  • Icon sidebar tabs. The right sidebar tabs show icons at every width, so the Notifications tab and its unread count always fit.

v0.9.4

New features

  • Share invitations. A share waits for you in a new Notifications pane in the right sidebar, with a count on its tab. It shows who shared what and whether you can edit, and nothing reaches your vault until you press Accept.
  • Who shared what. A chip in the editor names the owner of a shared file and your access. Shared with me names the sharer under each entry, and the file tree marks folders that belong to someone else. None of this is written into your files.

Improvements to existing features

  • Invitation status. The Share window tells you what an invitation is waiting on: their acceptance, a device to unlock it, or a Jotura account for that address. An address with no account is flagged as you type, which catches typos.
  • Instant accept. Accepting is a single request. If you signed up after being invited, one of the sharer's devices finishes it, and their phone does so in the background.
  • Android follows the same invitation rules and helps finish invitations for the folders you share.

Fixes

  • A shared single note arrives as a note. It used to arrive as a folder named after the note.
  • Two shared notes with the same name become Notes.md and Notes (2).md.

v0.9.3

Improvements to existing features

  • Faster conversion. The converter unpacks once at install. A document that took 17 to 25 seconds converts in under a second, and 95 documents take about 90 seconds. The installer is 30 to 40 MB larger.
  • Search by meaning returns as many notes as you asked for, Smart scores read on a sensible scale, and the sidebar search has the same Keyword, Semantic and Smart control as the search page.
  • Conversion errors. When conversion is blocked, Settings names the reason.

Fixes

  • Document conversion works on macOS again. In 0.9.2 every PDF, Word file and spreadsheet failed with a sandbox error.
  • Agent instruction files stop rewriting themselves on each release and on each machine, so they stay out of your recent notes and the sync queue.
  • On Android, the cursor stays put when a change arrives from another device.
  • Installing the agent skills from the CLI works on Windows again.

v0.9.2

New features

  • Open an Obsidian vault as it is. Jotura ignores .obsidian and .trash, reads your attachment folder, daily notes settings and templates folder, and writes nothing there. Your Obsidian templates appear beside Jotura's. Canvas and Bases files open as JSON text, and audio and video sync up to 16 MB.
  • Obsidian syntax. Wikilinks with aliases, headings and block references, embeds, callouts, task states [/] [-] [>] [?], ==highlights==, math, comments, footnotes and block ids render and keep every byte through edits. Insert them from the slash menu, the selection toolbar or shortcuts, and right-click a checkbox for the task states.
  • Per-vault switches. Convert documents automatically and Sync automatically in this vault are set per vault. Both start off in a new vault that contains .obsidian, and a notice offers Convert now when documents are waiting.
  • New CLI commands. jotura tasks lists tasks grouped like the Tasks pane. jotura tags counts tags. jotura clip <url> saves a web page as a note under Clippings. jotura read and jotura edit accept a bare note name and list candidates when it is ambiguous.

Improvements to existing features

  • Link resolution follows Obsidian's rules in the editor, backlinks and the CLI: case-insensitive, the shortest path wins, anchors are stripped, aliases resolve and unknown names stay unresolved. Aliases show in the link picker and quick open, and inline #tags count in the Tags pane.
  • Daily notes. Creating upcoming daily notes is its own switch, off by default. A vault with Obsidian daily notes settings follows them.
  • Agent skills are split so agents load only what they need, with skill folders for Codex and OpenCode and a plugin marketplace.
  • Re-indexing asks first, and with OpenAI it shows the chunk count, the tokens and the likely cost.
  • jotura tag add keeps a bare tags: work value and strips a leading # from the tags it reads.

v0.9.1

New features

  • Themes. Pick a palette in Settings > Appearance: Jotura, Graphite, Fjord, Moss or Contrast, each with a light and a dark variant. Mode follows your system or stays fixed.
  • Custom theme. Turn on Custom theme and Jotura creates Jotura/theme.json seeded with your current palette. Edit it in Jotura or with the CLI and the app repaints as you type. A three-line file that only changes the accent is a complete theme, and a broken file falls back and tells you what it could not read. Your agent can write one for you, since the skill documents the format.

Fixes

  • Dark mode no longer flashes light on launch.

v0.9.0

New features

  • OpenAI embeddings. In Settings > Semantic search, choose OpenAI, paste your API key and pick text-embedding-3-small or the larger model. The local model stays the default and the private option. jotura doctor reports which provider built the index.

Improvements to existing features

  • Agent instructions update themselves. The managed section of each instruction file records the version that wrote it, so updates apply on their own and anything you added around that section survives.
  • Shorter instructions point agents to the skill so they read the full guidance.
  • Saving an API key keeps the window responsive.

Fixes

  • jotura edit rejects a mismatched text flag. It used to report success and write an empty body.
  • Confirm dialogs appear again.

v0.8.1

Fixes

  • Search by meaning no longer holds a Mac at full CPU. The model runs on the CPU on Mac, which is many times faster than CoreML for it.
  • A note that fails to embed is set aside until it changes or you re-index, and one bad passage leaves the rest of the note indexed. Settings and jotura doctor show the count.
  • UTF-16 files, such as SQL Server exports, embed like everything else.
  • Turn off & delete index stops within a second and stays off after a restart.

v0.8.0

New features

  • Agents in Settings. Settings > Agents shows what is in sync, what is waiting and what conflicts. Press Sync now, or resolve a conflict with one click by keeping the vault's version or this machine's.
  • Agent auto-sync. On by default. Agent configuration changes apply moments after sync delivers them, and conflicts wait for you. Switch it off in the same section.

Improvements to existing features

  • jotura agents sync --item <path> resolves one conflicted file and leaves the rest.
  • The docs cover the Agents settings and the memory, context and hook commands.

v0.7.0

New features

  • Agents folder. Keep the instruction files, skills and rules for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini and Copilot in the vault's Agents/ folder. Add another tool, such as Cursor rules, with a few lines of frontmatter. Edit them on any device, even your phone, then run jotura agents sync to write them where each tool expects them.
  • Two-way agent sync. Hand edits and installer changes flow back into the vault. Real conflicts are reported, nothing is deleted without asking, and a one-time backup is taken the first time a file is touched.

v0.6.1

New features

  • Agent memory. Agents record decisions with their reasoning, facts and follow-ups as plain notes in a Memory/ folder with jotura memory log. jotura memory recall "<topic>" finds them, ranking important and recent ones first, and a superseded decision retires.
  • Context briefings. jotura context "<task>" returns your conventions, the relevant memories and every open follow-up in one briefing. Run jotura hook install claude to add it to the start of every Claude Code session.

v0.6.0

New features

  • GitHub Copilot. jotura skill install copilot joins Claude Code, Codex and Gemini.
  • Notes skill. A companion skill teaches agents where notes belong, when to capture and how to link notes together.
  • Agent Conventions note. Agents record your folder structure, naming rules and corrections in a conventions note in the vault, where every agent can read it and sync carries it to every machine.

Improvements to existing features

  • jotura skill install writes inside marked blocks in each tool's config file, so your own text there is never overwritten.

v0.5.0

New features

  • Plain text on Android. Text, code, SQL, log, CSV and HTML files appear in the phone's file list with their own icons and open in a read-only viewer. HTML shows a safe preview with a source toggle.
  • Google Play. Install and update the Android app from Google Play. The APK stays on the download page.
  • Copy path. Right-click a note or folder in the sidebar and choose Copy path to copy its vault-relative path.

Improvements to existing features

  • Phone search looks inside note and file text as well as titles.
  • Window size. The app opens maximized on a 1080p display and as a large centered window on bigger screens.
  • Lists. Enter on an empty list item leaves the list, nested bullets included.

Fixes

  • UTF-16 files, the SQL Server and PowerShell default, index correctly, and one unreadable file can no longer stall indexing.
  • Tapping a checkbox in a long note on Android keeps the page still.

v0.4.0

New features

  • Plain text and code files. Click a .txt, .sql, code, config or CSV file to edit it in a code editor with highlighting for over a hundred languages, autosave and sync.
  • HTML view. HTML files open as a safe preview with scripts off. Use the toggle for the source, or right-click the file and choose Open in browser.
  • Mermaid diagrams. Write a code block tagged mermaid and the editor draws the diagram.

Improvements to existing features

  • Links to any of these files open them in the right tab, and backlinks count them.
  • Search reads the visible text of HTML pages.
  • CLI. Plain text files are listed, searched, grepped and edited like notes, and frontmatter commands refuse non-Markdown files.
  • Sidebar. Files that open in the app look enabled.
  • Jotura stops making Markdown copies of HTML and CSV files and cleans up the old ones, keeping any you edited.

v0.3.0

New features

  • One-line install. Copy the command from the download page into a terminal. It installs the app, the jotura command and the agent skill, checks every download's checksum and launches Jotura. Run it again later to upgrade.
  • Linux auto-update. The script installs the AppImage by default, so Linux updates itself. Add the flag shown on the download page to install the .deb.
  • Android navigation. A bottom bar switches between recent notes and a full folder tree, and you can create notes on the phone.
  • Sidebar actions. Drag folders into other folders, press F2 to rename, and right-click a note to reveal it in your file manager.

Improvements to existing features

  • One-click trash. Moving a note to the trash asks nothing, since the trash is always recoverable. Permanent deletion has left the menus.
  • Right-click menus stay on screen near the bottom of the window.

Fixes

  • Confirmation dialogs work in the installed app, including creating a note from a wiki link.
  • Task checkboxes line up with their text at every font size, and the recents list updates the moment you save.

v0.2.8

New features

  • jotura shares list lists your shares from the command line. View-only shares are protected from edits, and edits in shared folders queue for sync.
  • Linux ARM64. Native builds run on a Raspberry Pi 5. Get them from the download page.

Improvements to existing features

  • Quiet merges. When a note changes on disk while you edit it, Jotura merges both versions and carries on with no banner.
  • Android sign-in state. The app tells signed in, signed out and expired apart. An expired session shows one message with a one-tap sign-in that remembers your email.
  • The app tells you when an invitation email could not be delivered.

Fixes

  • Sync stops signing you out. A session ends only when you sign out or leave a device unused for thirty days. The fix is on the server, so every install benefits.
  • Switching to view-only access keeps the shared folder on your phone.
  • Deleting a shared note while sync is paused sticks.
  • Invitations with identical folder names stay separate.

v0.2.7

Improvements to existing features

  • Shares recover with your sync password. Any device that can unlock your vault unlocks your shares, so a new device joins them without waiting for another. Opening Jotura on a signed-in device repairs the others.
  • Restore progress. Restoring a vault on a new machine shows progress and opens the vault when it finishes.
  • Tappable links on Android. Web links open your browser and note links jump to the note.

Fixes

  • Editing the same line on two devices merges into one line.
  • Synced notes keep the date you edited them.
  • Task checkboxes line up with their text on Android.
  • Removing a device from your account signs it out.

v0.2.6

New features

  • Version history. Right-click a note and choose Version history, or run it from the command palette. Editing sessions sit on the left and a word-level comparison on the right, side by side or unified. In a shared vault each session names its author. Press Restore to bring back any version, a deleted note included; the restore is added as the newest change, so nothing is lost.

Improvements to existing features

  • History rebuilds from your encrypted sync data, so a fresh install has your full history. Versions are kept for three years and the server sees only ciphertext.
  • Android records history for every edit from this release on.

v0.2.5

New features

  • Shares on Android. An invitation banner appears in the app. Tap to accept and the shared notes mount under Shared with me, ready to read and edit. Viewer shares open read-only, and leaving a share moves your copy to the trash. Sharing out still happens on the desktop, and both sides need Jotura Sync.

v0.2.4

New features

  • Sharing. Right-click a folder or note, choose Share and invite someone by email. They see it in their Shared section and you both edit the same notes, with changes merging even when you type at the same time. Notes are end-to-end encrypted with keys only invited people hold. Editors can write, viewers can read, and removing someone cuts their access at once. Both sides need Jotura Sync.

v0.2.3

Fixes

  • A list mixing bullets and checkboxes could show an empty bullet or checkbox that came back when deleted. The editor reads mixed lists correctly on desktop and Android, and your files were never affected.

v0.2.2

Improvements to existing features

  • One tab per note. Opening a note that is already open switches to its tab, from search, the calendar, tasks, wikilinks or anywhere else. Existing duplicates fold into one and keep unsaved changes.

Fixes

  • Deleted lines stay deleted after sync in vaults made before 0.2.0. The first open after updating seeds a merge baseline for the whole vault. Update Android too.

v0.2.1

New features

  • Phone-only vault. On the first Android screen, choose Create a vault on this phone for a free vault that works offline, with example notes if you want them. Turn sync on later by setting a sync password and saving your recovery phrase, and everything uploads from where it is.

v0.2.0

New features

  • Android app. Sign in, pick your vault and your notes download and stay in sync, with the same end-to-end encryption and editor as the desktop. Tables and other complex blocks display and are marked edit on desktop. Get the APK from the download page.
  • Quick capture. Tap the capture button on Android to drop a thought into today's daily note.

Improvements to existing features

  • Sync merges. When a note changes on two devices, Jotura merges both sets of changes and keeps everything, with no conflict copies or dialogs on desktop or phone.
  • Faster catch-up. A device that has been offline jumps straight to the newest version of each note.

Fixes

  • Saving on Windows survives the brief file locks antivirus scans cause.

v0.1.63

Improvements to existing features

  • Sandboxed conversion. Document conversion runs sandboxed on every platform with limits on time, memory and output.
  • Single-use sign-in. Codes and sessions are strictly single-use, even under simultaneous requests.
  • Subscription status. While sync waits on a subscription, the status reads Subscription needed and sync resumes once your subscription is active.

Fixes

  • If another program deletes or moves a note you are editing, Jotura asks whether to recreate it or close the tab, and holds autosave until you choose.
  • Simultaneous edits from the app and the CLI resolve to exactly one writer, and the other is told why.

v0.1.62

New features

  • Jotura Sync subscription. Subscribe at jotura.io/pricing for £4 a month or £40 a year and manage billing at jotura.io/account. The app stays free and local, and if a subscription lapses sync pauses while downloads keep working. Settings shows your plan, renewal date and a Manage billing link.

Improvements to existing features

  • Recovery phrases copy as a numbered list.
  • The status pill names a failed payment.

Fixes

  • Tab moves between the password and recovery word fields in the sync dialogs.
  • Document conversion skips Word's temporary lock files.

v0.1.61

Improvements to existing features

  • Production sync. Sync runs on api.jotura.io. If sync asks to be set up after updating, turn it on again; your notes upload once and nothing local changes.
  • This is the first release Jotura delivered to itself through Update ready.

Fixes

  • Opening the first note in a session no longer blanks the editor.
  • Images pasted into notes inside folders, daily notes included, display.

v0.1.60

New features

  • Auto-update. When a release ships, Update ready appears in the sidebar status bar. Click it to download, verify and relaunch.
  • Local history. The History panel in the right sidebar lists earlier versions of the open note. Click one to view it and Restore to bring it back.
  • Tags pane. The Tags tab in the sidebar lists every frontmatter tag with a count. Click a tag to see its notes.
  • Templates in the app. Create and edit templates in Settings, then start a note from one in the command palette or a folder's right-click menu. Date and title variables fill in.
  • Export. Export any note as a standalone HTML file, or print and save it as PDF.

Improvements to existing features

  • Search tab. Search opens as a pinned tab at the front of the tab bar.
  • Settings layout. Essentials come first, and diagnostics, logs and maintenance sit in expandable groups.
  • Tasks. Typing - [ ] makes a checkbox, and done tasks use a lighter strikethrough.
  • File badges. Sidebar files show coloured type badges such as MD, TS and PDF.
  • Startup is faster because the editor loads after the first paint. Narrow side panels collapse to icons.

Fixes

  • The app and the CLI report their real version numbers.
  • A component that fails to load can no longer blank the interface.

v0.1.59

New features

  • New recovery phrase. Settings > Sync > New recovery phrase makes a fresh phrase from your sync password, shows it once and asks you to confirm you saved it.

Improvements to existing features

  • Quick sync setup. Turning on sync takes seconds and shows your recovery phrase at once. The first upload runs in the background with progress in the status bar, and the count only goes up.
  • Sidebar look. Notes have their own icon, and rows and hover states match Settings.
  • Folders in search results. The sidebar, the search page and Quick Open show each note's folder.

Fixes

  • Quick Open shows vault paths in place of long system paths, and the path readout under the tab bar is gone.

v0.1.58

New features

  • Search by meaning. Turn it on in Settings > Semantic search (a one-time 34 MB download), then press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+F and describe what you remember. Keyword finds exact words, Semantic finds meaning and Smart blends both. The model runs on your computer, uses the GPU when there is one, and re-indexes only what you change.
  • Status bar. The sidebar status bar shows indexing, conversion and sync progress in one place.
  • jotura search --mode smart gives scripts and agents the same ranking as the app.

v0.1.57

New features

  • Documents beside their notes. Drop a PDF or Word file into the vault and a Markdown note appears next to it (report.pdf gets report.pdf.md), whether the app was open or not. Click the document in the sidebar to open its note, or right-click to open the original. Your edits to the note survive changes to the original.

Improvements to existing features

  • Settings redesign. Controls are grouped in the style of macOS System Settings, and each section shows its detail only when the feature is on.
  • Sidebar. Documents and images are dimmed with a file-type icon.
  • The hidden Converted folder is gone, and existing copies move beside their documents.

Fixes

  • Copying a folder of files into the vault no longer freezes the window.
  • Today in the calendar and the Tasks pane follows the real date past midnight.

v0.1.56

Fixes

  • On Windows, autosave no longer raises the 'note changed on disk' warning, and the file tree stops refreshing on every save.

v0.1.55

Fixes

  • Opening today's daily note and typing straight away no longer raises the 'note changed on disk' warning. Every write the app makes announces itself to the file watcher first.

v0.1.54

Fixes

  • Fast typing no longer raises the 'note changed on disk' warning against your own save. Edits from other apps and the CLI still show up at once.

v0.1.53

Fixes

  • The cursor stays put when an autosave finishes while you type.
  • Saving rewrites only the block you touched, so blank lines between sections survive and bold text saves reliably.
  • The 'changed on disk' warning appears only for outside edits, and Keep my version works.
  • Typing in the sync password confirmation box keeps the cursor in that box.

v0.1.52

Improvements to existing features

  • Plain Markdown vault. Notes on disk are ordinary files you can open in other apps, grep, back up and script, with nothing to unlock. Full-disk encryption such as FileVault or BitLocker protects them at rest, and sync still encrypts every note on your device before upload.
  • Work while sync waits. If sync needs its password, you keep reading, writing and searching.
  • CLI. jotura unlock and jotura lock are gone. jotura sync status, jotura sync login and jotura sync logout manage the sync key, shared with the desktop app.

v0.1.51

Improvements to existing features

  • Conflict copies. When the same note is edited on two devices at once, the version you have open stays and the other is saved beside it as a named conflict copy.
  • Sync activity and conflicts appear in the diagnostics log.

Fixes

  • A note no longer conflicts with itself on one device after a dropped connection or a forced resync.

v0.1.50

New features

  • Copy diagnostics. Press Copy diagnostics in Settings to gather the app version, system, converter status and recent log lines for a bug report. The log stays on your machine.

Improvements to existing features

  • The vault database is checked when it opens, so damage is reported clearly and can be restored from your cloud copy.

v0.1.49

Improvements to existing features

  • Document status. Settings > Documents shows how many documents are converted, failed and pending, lists the failures, and has Retry failed conversions.
  • Unreadable documents, such as corrupt or password-protected PDFs, are tried once and left alone until the file or the converter changes.

v0.1.48

Improvements to existing features

  • Conversion backlog. The converter works through hundreds of documents continuously, new ones first. Convert pending documents in Settings starts the whole backlog.

v0.1.47

Fixes

  • Documents containing curly quotes, accented letters or emoji convert on Windows.

v0.1.46

Fixes

  • Console windows no longer flash on Windows at startup or during document conversion.

v0.1.45

Fixes

  • Document conversion works on macOS.
  • Only real document types are converted, and stray entries made for images are cleaned up when you open the vault.

v0.1.44

New features

  • Converted folder. A read-only Converted folder in the sidebar mirrors your document folders. Open an entry to read the text that search matches against.

v0.1.43

New features

  • Activity indicator. An indicator beside the sync status shows when Jotura is indexing, converting or syncing.

Improvements to existing features

  • Responsive unlock. The app is usable the moment you unlock while indexing, conversion and sync carry on in the background. Search says when it is still catching up, and quick open is instant.

v0.1.42

New features

  • Documents. Put a PDF, Word file, spreadsheet or other document in your vault and Jotura makes a searchable Markdown copy. Drag it into the app, paste it into a note, run jotura import, or turn on the import folder and drop files in Finder or Explorer.
  • Edit in the native app. Open a document in Word, Preview or Excel from the vault. Saved changes go back into the vault, and an interrupted edit is offered for recovery at the next unlock.
  • jotura search-documents searches converted text and returns the original document paths.

Improvements to existing features

  • The converter ships inside the app, runs sandboxed with no network access, and a document converted on one device arrives converted on the others.

v0.1.41

Improvements to existing features

  • Themed scrollbars. Slim, rounded scrollbars match the light and dark themes.
  • Table headers sit tighter above their rows.

v0.1.40

New features

  • CLI on the Windows PATH. On first launch the app offers to add the jotura command to your PATH, with no admin prompt. The same Install button lives in Settings > Command-line tool.

v0.1.39

New features

  • jotura backlinks <path> and jotura links <path> list incoming and outgoing links.
  • jotura trash <path> moves a note to the trash, and trash list, trash restore and trash empty manage it.
  • jotura templates lists, shows, creates and deletes templates. jotura create --template meeting <name> fills in {{date}}, {{datetime}}, {{filename}} and {{title}}.
  • jotura grep <pattern> runs a regex search with --ignore-case, --include, --files-with-matches and the other familiar flags.

v0.1.38

New features

  • jotura edit --apply <edits.json> applies several edits to one note with one hash check and one atomic write.
  • jotura batch <ops.json> applies edits across several notes together or not at all.
  • --diff on every command that writes returns a unified diff.

Improvements to existing features

  • A hash conflict returns a diff between what the CLI meant to write and what is on disk.

v0.1.37

New features

  • --dry-run on write, edit, create, rename, delete, frontmatter and tag previews the change and the resulting hash.
  • jotura doctor runs nine checks and reports pass or fail as JSON.
  • jotura skill install <claude|codex|gemini|all> writes the agent skill into each tool's config.
  • jotura today opens or creates today's daily note.
  • jotura watch streams vault changes as one JSON line per event.
  • Shell completion for bash, zsh and fish.

v0.1.36

New features

  • Bundled CLI. The jotura command ships in the installer. Windows and the .deb put it on your PATH at install. On macOS, press Install in Settings > Command-line tool. The AppImage offers to copy it to ~/.local/bin on first launch.

Fixes

  • macOS release builds complete again.

v0.1.35

Fixes

  • Installers build again, so the CLI from 0.1.33 and the agents page from 0.1.34 ship in real downloads.

v0.1.34

New features

  • Agents page. jotura.io/agents walks through installing the CLI and teaching Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI to use your vault, with the skill file to download.

v0.1.33

New features

  • The jotura CLI. Read, search and edit your vault from a terminal, for scripts and AI agents such as Claude Code. Unlocking in the desktop unlocks the CLI too, and changes from either side show in the other within a second.

Improvements to existing features

  • Signed-out warning. A titlebar indicator and a banner show when you are signed out of a vault with sync turned on.

v0.1.32

Fixes

  • Images display inside encrypted vaults.

v0.1.31

Improvements to existing features

  • Images live in the vault. Drop, paste or insert an image and Jotura copies it into the vault's assets folder, keeping its name and adding a suffix when the name is taken. An image already in the vault is linked where it is.

v0.1.30

Improvements to existing features

  • Sign-in emails send from jotura.io, and a rejected message returns a clear error you can retry.

v0.1.29

Fixes

  • Sync recovers when another device pushed first. It pulls the remote changes, keeps any real divergence as a conflict file and retries your edits.

v0.1.28

New features

  • New look. A geometric jot mark, a warm near-black and cream palette with an ember accent, and a Newsreader wordmark across the app and the site. Settings has an About panel.

v0.1.27

New features

  • Tasks pane. Open the Tasks tab in the right sidebar to see every checkbox in the vault grouped by overdue, today, upcoming and undated. Tick and filter tasks in place. Tasks in daily notes take that day's date, and @due(YYYY-MM-DD) dates any other task. Settings controls how far back the list looks.

v0.1.26

Improvements to existing features

  • Tables. Hovering shows the row and column gutters every time, every cell is clickable, and column widths survive a reload. Drag a column to a fixed width and long content wraps inside it.

v0.1.25

New features

  • Tables. Type /table for a 3×3 table with a header row. Tab and Shift+Tab move between cells, Tab on the last cell adds a row, and Mod+Enter inserts a row below. Hover for gutters with drag handles, alignment and insert or delete buttons, or right-click a gutter for the full menu. Tables save as standard GFM Markdown.

v0.1.24

New features

  • Daily notes calendar. Click a date in the calendar in the right sidebar to open or create its note at Daily/YYYY/MM/YYYY-MM-DD.md. The next two weeks are created ahead, and Settings sets that window.

Fixes

  • Sync recovers from ref_count_underflow errors after a large batch of renames.

v0.1.23

Fixes

  • Sync drops queued uploads whose file has gone missing, which had jammed the queue.

v0.1.22

Fixes

  • Re-release of the 0.1.21 queue fix after a macOS build failure.

v0.1.21

Fixes

  • Sync skips queued uploads over the server limit, so the rest of the queue drains. Your files stay on disk.

v0.1.20

Fixes

  • Re-release of the 0.1.19 size filter after a macOS build failure.

v0.1.19

Fixes

  • Files over 16 MiB stay local and stop triggering repeated upload errors.

v0.1.18

Improvements to existing features

  • Task checkboxes are larger rounded squares with a white tick on the accent colour, and done tasks fade and strike through.

v0.1.17

Improvements to existing features

  • Larger files sync. The server accepts files up to 100 MiB, and an oversized upload shows a clear error in Sync diagnostics.

v0.1.16

New features

  • Sync diagnostics. Settings shows your account, device, vault, pending changes, last sync times and recent errors, with Copy diagnostics and Force re-sync buttons.

Fixes

  • Folders pulled from another device appear in the file tree.
  • Pushing a folder no longer breaks the whole upload.

v0.1.15

New features

  • Paste images. Paste or drop an image into a note. Clipboard images save to assets/ as pasted-<timestamp>, dropped files keep their name, and the link goes in at the cursor.

Fixes

  • Routine remote updates no longer create conflict files.
  • The version number shows on macOS.

v0.1.14

New features

  • Documents and images sync. PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument, RTF, EPUB and image files sync encrypted beside your notes, up to 25 MiB each. Click one in the sidebar to open it in its default app.
  • Version number in the bottom left of the sidebar.

Improvements to existing features

  • Tabs. The mouse wheel scrolls a crowded tab bar sideways, and the active tab scrolls into view.

Fixes

  • Recovery phrase screens fit small windows.

v0.1.3

Improvements to existing features

  • Live remote edits. An open note refreshes when edits from another device arrive.

Fixes

  • Divergent versions are kept as .conflict-* files, and an autosave hash conflict shows a readable error.

v0.1.2

Fixes

  • Restoring a vault onto a second device works.

v0.1.1

Fixes

  • You can restore into a folder that already has files; Jotura refuses only when a vault is already there. A failed restore cleans up after itself, and decrypt errors say more.

v0.1.0

New features

  • First release. A local-first Markdown editor with end-to-end encrypted sync across your devices.

Each release is published to the download page.
